Canada Day

Each year, Blacks/Africans in the Lower Mainland come together to celebrate Canada Day – African style.  The theme of this event is…

“Proud to be Canadian – African Style”
…and unites community members in recognition of the opportunities provided by living in Canada.  It presents a platform for revisiting Canada’s history especially as it has affected immigration.

Canada Day takes the format of a social day where African storytellers tell Canadian stories to Canadian youth of different cultural backgrounds, and Canadian storytellers sharing their renditions of African stories
.

African dancers are also on hand to depict Canadian historical stories through dance.  This is a day where Africans dress in traditional dress and share their culture as they embrace their new homeland.
